the answer is simply that some cameras do this and some don't. i'm not sure this is always true, but i think most mirror shutter cameras stop whereever they want and not the beamsplitter kind. i like the flash frames actually. makes it easier to find the scene breaks when editing.

    Question

Can anyone tell me why my super-8 camera
gate stays open sometimes and remains
closed other times when i stop the camera
    from running?
I have three cameras and only one of them
does this. When projected, my footage has
a very distracting "pop" on the frame left
    open. Why does this happen?

Spring wound cameras stop wherever when the wind runs out. The Beaulieu mirror shutters always stop in the closed position UNLESS you are using the remote control at which case they too stop wherever. What camera do you have this problem with?

It's a old Sears brand camera. The only
reason I use it is for the manual exposure
control. It's the only one I own that has
    manual control.

Prof 16/35 mm cameras may stop with open shutter, as every szene is intended to be edited anyway.
But S8 cameras... all of them stop in closed position. If not, there maybe a problem with the control contact inside the camera. This happend to me one time with a Beaulieu 6008. It has a rotating contact disc inside, one sector of it representing the closed shutter position. When running the camera and loosing the shutter, the motor only will stop when that contact section is in the correct position. If it is dirty, it may not work. A simple cleaning with alcohol normaly helps.
